WASTE CHARGES

Apr, 2011

Where there’s muck, there’s brass. And it would appear the government is intent in making more money from waste by raising charges for access to landfills, according to The Sunday Business Post.

The likely knock-on effect is higher charges for consumers and businesses in the form of increased bin charges.

Apparently, senior officials at the Department of Environment have warned of a shortfall in a €60m fund to cover the cost of key projects. They have told the government the only way to make up the ground is to charge more for what is dumped into it.

“Waste companies are currently operating to tight margins and it is likely that some or all of an increase in landfill levies would be passed onto both residential and commercial waste customers,” the newspaper reports.
