The untimely demise of Gerry Ryan is not only a personal tragedy for his family and friends; it is a potentially massive blow to RTE’s finances.
Several newspapers allude to the importance of the Gerry Ryan brand to the national broadcaster and the likely impact it will have on the bottom line.
“During a time of intense competition from commercial rivals in the radio market, Ryan’s larger-than-life persona continued to pull in more than 300,000 listeners a day,” The Sunday Business Post points out. “His forthright and sometimes arrogant style divided public opinion, but his pulling power on the airwaves made him the envy of other media organisations.”
Gerry Ryan is quite simply irreplaceable.
