Illegal downloading and the inexorable move to single-track purchases saw sales of music in Ireland plummet by more than three times the global average last year, The Sunday Times reports.

Citing an international industry report, the newspaper says sales in Ireland fell by 26%. Record company revenues in Ireland fell to €53.2m, down from €71.8m in 2008 and almost 50% lower than the value in 2005.

GRAHAM NORTON

Graham Norton, the man expected to become the BBC’s highest-paid presenter this year, earned €1.15m from his company So Television last year, The Sunday Tribune reports.

Accounts filed in the UK show pre-tax profits at the production house jumped to €908,000 in the year to end-July 2009 compared with €190,000 the previous year.

Cork-born Norton is tipped to take over from Jonathan Ross in the BBC’s flagship Friday night slot.

ADVERTISING SPEND SLASHED

The advertising spend on Irish broadcast and print media was slashed by more than 25 per cent last year, says The Sunday Business Post.
