Jan, 2011

A movie that benefited from Section 481 tax relief has secured a $1m distribution deal after it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival last week, The Sunday Business Post reports.

The Guard, starring Brendan Gleeson and shot in Galway, has been snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics and will be the first Irish movie in several years to get a mass release in the US as well as South and central America.

The €7m comedy/thriller has already been sold to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Britain and Scandinavia.

It was made by Element Pictures in partnership with London-based Reprisal Films under the Section 481 tax-break scheme.

The Guard is likely to be released in Ireland during the summer.
