Despite the ongoing recession, there is clearly plenty of momentum left in plastic. The Sunday Tribune reports that Mastercard wants to introduce a debit card into Ireland and are in talks with the two big banks on the issue.

The arrival of the internationally accepted Mastercard would challenge Visa’s hegemony in the Irish market and it could also spell the end for Laser cards, which work only in Ireland and have limited acceptance abroad under the Maestro co-brand.
