BETTING ON THE WORLD CUP

Jun, 2010

A cautionary tale for those of us who believe sports results are a foregone conclusion and a sure thing.

The soccer World Cup has thrown up more than its share of surprises and the bookies as usual are the big winners. Paddy Power told The Sunday Business Post it has profited from a series of “bookmaker friendly outcomes” so far.

“It’s still early days yet, but the games have been pretty tough to predict from a punter’s perspective,” the bookmaker said. “It’s been a pretty good tournament for the bookies so far.”

As my old man never tired of reminding me; “Son, always remember there’s no such thing as a poor bookie”.
