The state’s biggest retail bank, AIB, operated special units to advance huge loans to property developers independently of its branch network, The Sunday Tribune reports.Insiders say this policy of separation is the reason the bank had racked up such massive loans to developers and why over €19bn in property loans – a seventh of its loan book – will be transferred to Nama.
